In a rural area of the Gambia, WEC is involved with an innovative project which aims to improve the physical, socio-economic and spiritual well-being of the community. There is a nutritional centre which provides care for 114 inpatients, an outpatient therapeutic program which can care for a further 146 patients, a small income generating project, and a medicinal garden.
You might be wondering what a medicinal garden is!
Medicines are very expensive in the Gambia and often the source and safety of the drugs are questionable. The aim of the medicinal garden is to provide food, nutritional supplements and natural medicines for the patients at the nutritional centre. They are able to grow plants which are used to produce creams, medicinal drinks, and nutritional supplements which can significantly help in cases of malnutrition.
In another area of the Gambia, WEC missionary John Grenier is working with local farmers to find better, more effective forms of irrigation, as well as developing a tree nursery to provide people with a variety of fruit trees. Not only will this improve the diet of the community, but it also provides an investment in the bio-health of the land and helps to combat deforestation.
Are you ‘green fingered’? The team would love to have more workers to cultivate and maintain the medicinal garden, and at the same time, reach, teach and disciple local people. Could that be you? Contact your nearest WEC branch office for more information.
